Each year right around April 22, we celebrate Earth Day by having an Earth Day Celebration. During this time, we hand out recycling info, backyard conservation info, and other useful information to the general public. Our celebration date will always be announced on this website, our Facebook page, and sent to the local media outlets. Stop by and see us for other goodies such as rain gauges, thermometers, and more!
Celebrate and educate is our mission on November 15. We deliver recycling-themed bulletin boards to participating area schools, then host a recycling booth at a local store in Whitley County. Here we display everyday items that can be recycled and giveaway reusable shopping bags.
Soil and Water Stewardship Week
Soil and Water Stewardship Week is celebrated between April and May. Materials vary each year, but always emphasize the true meaning of stewardship and the personal and social responsibility we share. By informing ourselves about and improving our natural resources, we learn to use them wisely. By doing this, we can achieve spiritual growth in our lives and leave a rich legacy for future generations.
For more information, please
We can provide informational and promotional materials to your civic groups and clubs!
As always, our time and information are free!
By participating in Williamsburg's Old Fashioned Trading Days, and Corbin's NIBROC Festival, we reach a non-traditional audience to provide them with program information and promotional goodies.
The Conservation District participates in all kinds of awards programs, but not for our own recognition. We nominate the ones out there doing the work - our landowners. Here is a list of our most recent nominations:
Each year we name a Whitley County Master Conservationist. This person must have recently participated in one of the programs available though our office and have completed a minimum of 90% of the contract. Then we nominate this person for the state award of Cooperator of the Year.
We have also nominated Whitley County landowners for an Earth Day Award with the Kentucky Environmental Quality Commission, as well as a national Friend of Conservation Award.
While the Farm Tour is planned and hosted by the Extension Service, the Conservation District and NRCS personnel enjoy attending and providing an invited speaker, as well as informational and promotional items.
NACD Conservation Photo Contest
The NACD/Auxiliary Photo Contest is open to amateur photographers. Participants can enter as many as five photos total each year. Each photo has to fit in one of the four natural resource or conservation photo categories.
